This is a small poem dedicated to the process of writing Reine, in my book Schicksal, based on my mother. Imagining Ma’s life from the childhood recitations, I had to get inside my mother’s character and develop her completely.
Of course it resulted in a lengthy period of introspection and self reflection. Now I understand and love my mother more completely, with more compassion than ever before. Ma I send you my love and am glad you are now free.
A child lives deep inside of me.
She hides herself so none can see.
Her pain, confusion, fear and doubt
Buried deep; not coming out.
You taught me much, my mother dear.
Unbeknownst I learnt to fear,
The gauntlet landed at my feet.
I relived your pain and wrote it neat.
